Passionate sports fans define Northeast Ohio. But even the most dedicated fans among us might need to be more familiar with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission (GCSC). This non-profit flies under the radar, working tirelessly behind the scenes to help bring major sporting events and competitions to the region. Event experiences that leave a lasting impact on athletes, the community, and the local economy.
Who are they?
Founded in 2000, GCSC is a non-profit organization dedicated to attracting, creating, managing, and enhancing sporting events in Northeast Ohio. Their mission is twofold: boosting the local economy and enriching the community through the power of sports.
What do they do?
GCSC doesn’t just sit back and wait for event organizers to come knocking. They actively bid on and secure major sporting events, ranging from collegiate championships like the upcoming 2024 NCAA Women’s Final Four to professional tournaments like the Dru Joyce Classic to international events like the 2024 Pan American Masters Games coming to Cleveland in July. They also work closely with local partners to develop educational events and programs.
When GCSC Wins, We All Win
As a GCSC board member since 2015, I’ve seen firsthand what goes on behind the scenes—the hard work, the extensive coordination, and, ultimately, the passion that drives all they do. The team at GCSC is the gold standard. Their level of service, their community engagement, the experiences they create, and their relentless approach to earning new opportunities for Cleveland. GCSC is second to none and has become a model that other cities strive to emulate.
GCSC: More Than Just Ticket Sales
By bringing high-profile competitions to Greater Cleveland, GCSC showcases the city to national and global audiences—it’s great PR for Cleveland that creates a tremendous ripple effect
Impacts local organizations: Working alongside venues, hotels, and businesses, the GCSC ensures a smooth and successful event experience for athletes, attendees, and the community. When these experiences are positive, it creates a feel-good vibe for all who are involved.
Boosts the economy: By attracting thousands of visitors, these events generate millions in revenue for hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. Since 2000, the GCSC has secured over 222 events, generating over $917 million in economic activity for Northeast Ohio (looking forward to hitting the $1 billion mark!). This revenue translates to countless jobs being created, businesses being supported, and tax dollars contributing to the community.
Enhances the community: Sports bring people together, foster civic pride, and inspire youth participation in athletics. The GCSC leverages sporting events to support community initiatives and create a lasting, positive impact that inspires ambassadors for our hometown and creates goodwill beyond sports. A great example is the 2021 NFL Draft—GCSC was instrumental in bringing the event to Cleveland. Beyond the business of football, the event was a full-sensory experience that spotlighted the city and engaged hundreds of local volunteers who made personal connections with athletes, their families, broadcasters, and guests.
GCSC: Supporting Athletes
For athletes, competing in Cleveland through GCSC-backed events means they experience top-notch facilities and competition. The GCSC works to secure venues that meet the highest standards and provide a world-class experience for athletes. Additionally, athletes benefit from increased exposure and opportunity. Participating in high-profile events can attract attention from scouts, coaches, and sponsors, potentially leading to future success.
GCSC: More Than Just Sports
The non-profit’s impact reaches beyond simply bringing big games, marquee events, and competitions to Cleveland—they actively:
- Support grassroots sports: Recognizing the importance of youth development, the GCSC provides grants and programs for local athletic initiatives.
- Organize community events: They go beyond professional sports, organizing events like the “Wednesday is FOUR Women” series, celebrating female athletes and business leaders.
- Celebrate the spirit of competition: GCSC creates opportunities for individuals of all skill levels and interests to participate in competitions. For example, this summer, Cleveland will host the 2024 World Yo-Yo Contest at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel and is vying to host other exciting competitive events like it.
- Promote volunteerism: GCSC relies on volunteers to help run events—giving them a front-row seat to the action—and creating opportunities for community engagement and skill development at multiple levels, which ensures opportunities for all.
- Support youth development: Sporting events inspire young people to participate in athletics, promoting healthy lifestyles and valuable life skills. GCSC programs use sports as a platform to teach and reinforce teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
- Support diversity and inclusion initiatives: The GCSC strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all athletes and participants.
- Promote sustainability: They work with partners to ensure events are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.
Shamrock x GCSC Connection
Shamrock has partnered with GCSC for years, providing branded swag, print materials, and event signage. In 2021, when in-person events weren’t back in action just yet, we created custom VIP gift kits for their annual fundraiser to accompany the online event: We selected and imprinted GCSC swag and gift items, created unique packaging for an unboxing experience, and managed door-to-door delivery for a personal connection. Additionally, this year, we’ll manage the official online store experience for the Pan-American Masters Games—the Pan-Am swag is available for participating athletes, spectators, and fans worldwide. The site is live this week. Be among the first to shop it here: Pan-American Masters Game Online Store.
The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is more than just an event organizer. They catalyze Northeast Ohio’s economic growth, community engagement, and athletic development. The best in the industry at bringing people together through the power of sports, GCSC is positively impacting the lives of athletes, fans, and the entire region. We’re proud to support their work!
